Before getting into this game specifically, this has to be the craziest start to the MLB postseason ever. Four NL teams playing each other to avoid a play-in game. Losers have a shot at the Division Series if they win the Wild Card game. And if the Cubs win, they play the Brewers AGAIN in the NLDS.
I personally don’t like the idea of division opponents playing in the NLDS, but it’s made for such a crazy start to the best time of year, that I don’t think I mind it anymore.
That all being said, while this feels more like a Cubs collapse than a Brewers comeback, the Cubs still won 95 games and had the second-best record in the NL (with Monday’s win putting the Brewers ahead). I’m not one to necessarily knock a 95 win team, even with the way things have ended.
However, I do think this means they’ll be out no later than the NLDS. Team morale has to be at a low. and they don’t have the curse pushing them the extra mile either.
Plus, they’ll have to go through the Brew Crew, AGAIN. I don’t think that bodes well for them at all, despite the game being so tight on Monday.
Side note: Christian Yelich came up just shy in his chase for the Triple Crown. That being said, he should be the NL MVP without question. I felt differently a few weeks ago, but can’t go with Javier Baez anymore. Yellich has done too much and led this team against the odds.
Combine his season stats and the Brewers success, with his stellar performance when the light shined brightest, it’s impossible to justify anyone besides Yelich earning the honors.
