Joe West might actually be the worst professional umpire/referee of all time. Certainly one of the most known.
I know Austin Davis isn’t the first pitcher I’ve seen use a notecard on the mound this year. Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s a little excessive when a pitcher has it, but that’s not the point. They should be able to use it. As far as I know, no one’s been called out for having one this season.
Then West said this after the game to the Associated Press:
“I told him we don’t allow him to carry anything on their glove, person or clothing except in some cases where there’s a rain situation we allow them to put a rosin bag in their pocket. Other than that they can’t have anything on the pitcher.”
“I saw him take it out and I went, ‘What the heck is that?’”
“I didn’t want to throw him out. I know it’s foreign but he’s not trying to cheat. Maybe he’s trying to get an advantage because he’s reading the scouting report, but it wasn’t pine tar, it wasn’t an emery board, it wasn’t whatever.
“In the long run, maybe they’ll let him (have the card). Right now, my hands are tied until they say yes or no. Right now, until the office says it’s OK to carry this, he can’t do it.
So glad Big Joe didn’t want to run someone for having a frigin note in their damn pocket. And, “Maybe he’s trying to get an advantage because he’s reading the scouting report,” might be THE most obvious statement I’ve ever heard in my life.
Actually, that’s at best the second-most obvious statement I’ve ever heard because Joe proceeded to confirm, “it wasn’t pine tar”.
I take everything bad I’ve said about Big Joe back. The man is a genius. A National Treasure even.
