Hypothetical situation…
Let’s say the postseason starts today. The Yankees probably roll out Luis Severino in the Wild Card game. Let’s say he goes seven, then Zach Britton and Aroldis Champan get the eighth and ninth. For the sake of this, the Yankees win.
Then they go with C.C. Sabathia and Masahiro Tanaka for the divisional series, with minimal bullpen usage, but can’t go to Severino for Game 3. Who do you think they go with? With what this bullpen looks like now, I’d bet the farm Aaron Boone has a bullpen day before he goes to Sonny Gray.
And I wouldn’t blame him. Gray’s good for at most three innings in a postseason start. Why use him when you can patch together nine innings between Chapman, Britton, David Robertson, Dellin Betances, Chad Green and Jonathan Holder. (Imagine if Tommy Kahnle figured it out?)
Pretty safe to say this is one of the deepest bullpens we’ve ever seen at the MLB level.
