Somehow I missed this over the weekend:
I knew it was close, but for some reason it felt like it would take the entire season for Davis to catch Ripken. That could be because i suck at math or little feel for the situation.
Why’s this so bad? Well Cal Ripken played in 3001 games over 21 seasons in an Orioles uniform. Striking out 1,306 in that stretch isn’t that bad. Means he’s only struck out once every 2.30 games, or 0.44 times a game.
Davis on the other had has played in 975 games for the Orioles, and now has 1,308 strikeouts. He almost strikes out every game (1.34) or 0.75 times a game.
What’s more insane is how often he plays for the Orioles. I know he has serious home run power, but Davis has hit .230 once since 2013. Not sure how he’s still on a MLB team. Probably has something to do with the fact that he’s still got $68 million left on his base salary from 2019-2022.
Not quite sure how that happened, but it did.
