I was stunned when I saw the report that LeBron James wasn’t interested in “elaborate recruiting pitches” anymore.
Initially it was because his publicist Bran Windhorst didn’t have the story first.
But in the bigger scheme of it, LeBron may never win again if he doesn’t form a super team. By no means is that a knock on him, but with how the Warriors and Celtics are constructed, anyone would need serious help to get past those teams.
Those teams are vulnerable, there’s no doubting that, and they have an expiration date attached to them, as well. But as things stand, they’re far and away the best teams in the league with everyone healthy. Not even close.
LeBron can’t beat them on his own. He needs some level of a supporting cast.
He’ll get a decent one for sure (unless he stays in Cleveland), but it doesn’t look like it’ll happen like it did with Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade over a decade ago.
I’m sure that’s not an easy move for LeBron, but it’s one I most definitely respect.
Let the GM’s and coaches worry about giving you a group of guys that works well. Do your thing on the court. If the group sucks, everyone will make it clear.
Hopefully this has an affect on the way other players handle free agency in the future, given LeBron has a way of setting a trend across the league.
