Dark Trinity: Darth Maul

Why him right now?

Well as I said in my last post, I’m hoping to do some more comic-oriented posts over the weekend. And I just banged out the Darth Maul mini series Son of Dathomir.

If you haven’t read it, it’s alright. I enjoyed it, but it’s nothing mind-blowing. Came out in 2014, I prefer the 5-book mini series that came out this year. Art was good in Son of Dathomir, the story line wasn’t that great. Written well just an odd plot.

Which brings me to my larger point, and WHY YOU HAVE A REASON TO CONTINUE READING.

Darth Maul has been immensely abused throughout his existence. I’m not talking about the character in the stories — though that would explain his immense amount of range. One of the angriest beings in a book or movie I’ve ever encountered.

But that’s not what I’m here to discuss. No, what I’m talking about is how Lucas Film killed him off WAY TO QUICKLY, and how Marvel and Disney has no idea how to handle such an awesome character.

We all know Disney Pictures as NEVER released a movie that was rated R (though some of it’s subsidiaries have). And with the speculation that Deadpool may not make the trip with the X-Men over to Disney — assuming the deal is made — it’s safe to assume they wouldn’t make a rated R movie specifically for Maul.

But they should, and I’ll get to that in a moment.

More importantly, how do you logically explain killing so quickly Darth Maul? I know this is almost 20 years late, but he was such a bad ass. Best character created for that movie. And he could’ve hung around until at least the start of the third.

Seriously, HOW DO YOU NOT LEARN from the Boba Fett experience? He’s got a bad ass look and had a far greater presence than Fett. Maul had so much potential. But they killed him right away.

I know they brought him back in the animated series based on the clone wars, and Son of Dathomir is related to that timeline, but it’s a bit late to bring him back for the ongoing Star Wars movies. I’d be fine if they had him back, I just doubt it’ll happen.

What Disney should do is make a separate origin movie. His mini series this summer would be a good place to base it on.

It’d be nice if Disney made it into an R-rated movie, but there’s no shot that happens. That movie would be sold out for WEEKS. Star was is always big. But then you come out with an R-rated movie for the one character who really deserves one — like Deadpool and Old Man Logan for the Fox/Marvel — and the fans will lose their frigin minds.

If you haven’t read this year’s mini series, I suggest you do so, too. The anger this guy has for the Jedi — and pretty much everyone else — is unparalleled. He’s raw and he needs to have room to be that way.

I’d even be happen with PG-13. It limits him and effects, but at least we get something. Dude is a gold mine. So much anger, so much pain. Maul might not expand the already gigantic Star Wars audience by much, but he would definitely leave a lasting impact on some fans who might think they’ve grown out of the movie that graced their childhood.

  1. I think they’re going to attempt to cure the “cool looking but underutilized” character syndrome that they have a history of by making Phasma a big player in the Last Jedi. I think a Maul movie could work for sure, and would be a nice way for Disney to segway back into the prequel era a bit.
